Today's Story: God Damn the USA

Thursday, Mar. 24, 2005 - 10:38 pm

I hate America.
There, I said it.
Do not get me wrong. I appreciate the privilege that I have been born into and the opportunities that I have because I was born here. That said, I was born here. By chance. Being born here does not mean that I have to, in Aaron's terms, kiss this country's ass. America is a country that is overrun by the ignorant who belive blindly what they are told is okay by society. People who raise their children to be in the military and who hold their entertainment choices to things no higher than something along the lines of whatever movie comes out that is completely devoid of originality or creativity that relies on the same formulas that have been used for decades and the same jokes that have been used in every other movie this person has seen. George W. Bush is the posterboy for these people. They can look at him and say, well son, look what we can be. Except that they cannot be that. Most of these people are in less fortunate situations than myself, and are oppressed by our society to not rise from those positions in society. You cannot be president without being wealthy.
But they see him as their personal hero, along with Bill Engvall and crew, and wear their red white and blue proudly, calling anyone who dares to question the military focus of our society unpatriotic, or worse- a terrorist. And they vote.
Now, Washington knows that they vote, in large numbers. So, who is legislation being written for? These people. The droning Americans. The people that Green Day talks about in their song American idiot. Television shows are being pitched for them and movies are being written for them. Our society revolves around people catering to the stupid mass who consume in bulk and who vote in bulk.
There are intelligent people out there. People who use logic. People who can see through the history of our country which we are supposed to find to be glorious, but is actually horrific. There are burning barren lands that have been left everywhere the United States has touched and there are countless ethnic groups that have been opressed by the spreading of American ideology. There are people other than myself who see this. Are there less of them than there are masses, or do they just refuse to buy into the system, therefore they do not consume and they do not vote in the numbers that the mass does?
The Ring Two came out this week. It got awful reviews. It was one of the worst reviewed movie out nationally. It was the first in the box office. An even worse reviewed nationally released movie was The Pacifier. It finished third in the box office. In one weekend, the Ring Two grossed 35.1 million dollars. Sideways, which was nominated for oscars and won golden globe awards, has made just under 70 million. In 22 weeks. Thats right, The Ring Two grossed half as much in one weekend as Sideways has in a span of 22 weeks. Even sadder is Hotel Rwanda, which has grossed 22.5 million in 13 weeks. Beaten by The Ring Two in one weekend.
Why is America so collectively ignorant?
